Meet the CGS coaches

CGS Director Steve Carroll and his talented staff of coaches helping goalies achieve success between the pipes.

Steve Carroll – Goalie Development Director

  • Goalie development leader who coaches boys and girls at the youth, high school and college levels.
  • Started the Carroll Goalie School (CGS) in 1995. Has trained goalies from 21 states including: Minnesota, Alaska, Arizona, California, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming. Thunder Bay, Canada.
  • 2025-26 – Goalie coach for Gustavus Adolphus College women’s hockey team (25th season).
    • 2023 NCAA Division III National Champions
    • 2022 NCAA Division III National Runner-Up
    • 2017 NCAA Division III Third Place Team
    • 17 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances
    • 15 MIAC Playoff Championships, 19 MIAC Regular Season Championships
  • Under Coach Carroll’s guidance, Gustavus goalies have earned these individual honors:
    • Most Valuable Player in 2023 NCAA D-III National Tournament
    • Second most career wins in NCAA D-III women’s hockey history (82)
    • Second most career shutouts in NCAA D-III women’s hockey history (35)
    • All-American (4 times)
    • Team MVP (5 times)
    • MIAC All-Conference (7 times)
    • MIAC Honorable Mention (5 times)
    • MIAC All-Rookie Team (3 times)
  • Minnesota Hockey’s Goalie Development Coordinator.
    • Founder and director of Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp and HP Shooting Camp
    • Named USA Hockey’s 2024 National Goaltending Developer of the Year
  • Played goalie for Minnesota State University, Mankato.
    • Starting goalie for 1980 NCAA Division II National Championship Team
    • Most Outstanding Player in the 1980 NCAA Division II National Tournament
    • Top 10 finalist for inaugural Hobey Baker Award, presented to best player in men’s college hockey – winner was Neal Broten
    • All-American (two times), Team Most Valuable Player (two times)
    • Played in four NCAA Division II Final Fours
    • NHL free-agent tryout with Minnesota North Stars, invited by General Manager Lou Nanne
    • Invited to participate in East-West College All-Star Game, featuring top players from NCAA Division I and Division II teams

      • 3,228 career saves (school record)
      • 81 career wins (second most in program history)
      • 6,895 career minutes played (second most in program history)
      • 115 career games played (second most in program history)
      • 38 games played in a season (second most in program history)
    • Voted MSU’s Male Athlete of the Century (2000)
    • Inducted into MSU’s Athletic Hall of Fame
  • Played three years at Edina-East (Minn.) High School for U.S. Hall of Fame Coach Willard Ikola.
    • Participated in Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament
    • Shutout hockey legend Neal Broten and Roseau in quarterfinals
    • Defeated Grand Rapids, two-time defending state champions in semifinals
    • Knocked off by Rochester John Marshall in championship game
    • First goalie inducted into Edina High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame
  • Won Minnesota State Peewee “A” Championship in first year of playing goalie.
    •  Championship game played at the iconic Met Sports Center in Bloomington.

Todd Carlson – Goalie Coach

  • 15th year on CGS staff.
  • Played junior hockey following prep career.
  • Played goalie for Richfield High School.
  • Attended several CGS clinics during youth hockey career.

David Carroll – Goalie Coach

  • 25th year on CGS staff.
  • Skills coach at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Shooting Camp.
  • Goalie coach, Apple Valley High School girls team.
  • Coach, Eastview Youth Hockey Association.
  • Played hockey and football for Augsburg University.
  • Lettered in five varsity sports at Richfield High School including hockey, football, baseball, tennis, golf.

Ashley Checkal – Goalie Coach

  • 11th year on CGS staff.
  • Goalie coach at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
  • Goalie coach, Armstrong/Cooper Youth Hockey Association.
  • Played goalie at Gustavus Adolphus College.
  • Played five years varsity hockey for Armstrong High School.
  • Earned All-Conference and Honorable Mention honors.
  • Attended Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp during prep career.
  • Played on a U14 team at age 11.

Louden Hogg – Goalie Coach

  • 4th year on CGS staff.
  • Goalie for College of the Holy Cross.
  • Trained with Coach Steve Carroll during prep career.
  • Goalie demonstrator at USA Hockey coaching clinics.
  • Counselor at Minnesota Hockey CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
  • Played two years of Jr. A hockey.
  • Selected to the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup USA U18 Select team.
  • Led Edina (Minn.) High School to state title as a sophomore.

Bill Manuel – Goalie Coach

  • 10th year on CGS staff.
  • Goalie development leader, USA Hockey’s Minnesota District.
  • Assistant director/goalie coach at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
  • Goalie coach for University of Wisconsin-Stout men’s hockey team.
  • Coached at goalie schools with Stephane Waite, Montreal Canadiens goalie coach
    and two-time Stanley Cup winner; and legendary Russian Olympic goalie Vladislav Tretiak.
  • Played goalie for University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Brad Parker – Goalie Coach

  • 4th year on CGS staff
  • Goalie development coordinator, USA Hockey Midwest Affiliate.
  • Goalie evaluator, USA Hockey Midwest Affiliate Development Camp.
  • Des Moines Youth Hockey goaltending skills development coordinator.
  • Romanian National Camp goaltending coach (2018).
  • Has coached goalies at all levels including NHL.
  • Played goalie in United States Hockey League (USHL).
  • Played high school hockey for Des Moines Capitals, four-year starter, three-time all-state selection.
