Meet the CGS Coaches

Coach Steve Carroll is a Minnesota goalie development leader. The Edina, Minn. native has more than 30 years coaching goalies at the youth, high school and college levels.

Steve Carroll’s Coaching Career

  • Goalie Coach-in-Chief – USA Hockey’s Minnesota District.
  • Director of Minnesota Hockey’s Dave Peterson High Performance Goalie Camp which he created in 2005.
  • Speaks about goalie development at USA Hockey Coaching Education Programs (CEP) clinics and Bronze Level goalie coaching clinics.
  • USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach.
  • Started the Carroll Goalie School in 1995 and has trained 100’s of boys and girls from around the country.
  • CGS participants have come from Minnesota, Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Montana, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin.
  • Coaches goalies at youth, high school and college levels, leads goalie development programs for Minnesota youth hockey associations.
  • Goalie coach for nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College women’s hockey team.
  • Has helped Gustavus goalies earn following individual honors: All-American (2018, 2017); MIAC All-Conference (2019, 2018, 2017, 2015, 2004); MIAC Honorable Mention (2012, 2011, 2008, 2006); MIAC All-Rookie Team (2020, 2009).
  • While on staff, Gustavus has won 15 MIAC regular season championships, participated in nine NCAA Division III National Tournaments.

Goalie career

  • Played four seasons for Minnesota State University, Mankato.
  • Led Mavericks to 1980 NCAA Division II National title, named tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
  • Participated in four NCAA Division II Final Four Tournaments.
  • Earned All-American honors two times.
  • Named a Top 10 finalist for inaugural Hobey Baker Award, presented to best player in men’s college hockey (Winner was Neal Broten).
  • Invite to tryout with the Minnesota North Stars, participated in the NHL training camp.
  • Holds multiple goalie records at Minnesota State University, Mankato including career games played (115), career minutes played (6895:36), career saves (3,570), career wins (81).
  • Selected as the Male Athlete of Century at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
  • Athletic Hall of Fame member at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
  • Played three years at Edina-East High School for legendary coach Willard Ikola.
  • Participated in Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament at St. Paul Civic Center.
  • Helped the Hornets defeat Roseau and hockey great Neal Broten 2-0 in quarterfinals; Grand Rapids, the two-time defending state champions in the semifinals; before falling to Rochester John Marshall in the championship game.
  • First goalie inducted into Edina High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
  • Started playing goalie at age 12, led Edina Peewee “A” team to state championship.

  • Plays goalie for UW-LaCrosse club hockey team.
  • Played four years for St. Croix Valley Fusion high school team in Wisconsin.
  • Earned all-conference, and academic all-conference team honors.
  • Named team captain during senior season.
  • Attended CGS clinics during youth hockey career.

Ryan Erickson

  • 7th year on CGS staff.
  • Played goalie for Eagan High School and Eagan Hockey Association.
  • USA Hockey certified referee.
  • Attended several CGS clinics during youth hockey career.

Joey Hudella

  • 3rd year on CGS staff.
  • Plays for goalie for Hastings Jr. Gold team.
  • Attended several CGS clinics during youth hockey career.

Amanda Koep

  • 5th year on CGS staff.
  • Played goalie for Gustavus Adolphus College and University of North Dakota.
  • Played for North Wright County in Minnesota Girls State High School Hockey Tournament.
  • Attended several CGS clinics during high school career.
  • Goalie coach for the 2020 Let’s Play Hockey Senior High School Girl’s Goalie of the Year.

Bill Manuel

  • 5th year on CGS staff.
  • Played goalie for University of Wisconsin-Stout.
  • Minnesota Hockey’s Associate Goalie Development Coordinator.
  • Goalie coach at Minnesota Hockey’s Dave Peterson High Performance Goalie Camp.
  • Coached at goalie schools with Stephane Waite, Montreal Canadiens goalie coach and two-time Stanley Cup winner, and legendary Russian Olympic goalie Vladislav Tretiak.
  • Goalie coach for Buffalo High School boy’s team.

Ashley Ritten

  • 4th year on CGS staff.
  • Played goalie at Gustavus Adolphus College.
  • Played five years varsity hockey for Armstrong High School.
  • Earned All-Conference and Honorable Mention honors.
  • Played on a U14 team at age 11.
