Meet the CGS coaches

Director Steve Carroll and his talented, experienced coaching staff have been training goalies for more than 25 years.

Steve Carroll

  • Minnesota goalie development leader.
  • Started the Carroll Goalie School in 1995, trained 100’s of boys and girls from around the country including Minnesota, Alaska, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Montana, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin.
  • Coaches goalies at youth, high school and college levels, runs goalie development programs for Minnesota youth hockey associations.
  • Goalie Coach-in-Chief – USA Hockey’s Minnesota District, leads goalie development presentations at USA Hockey Coaching Education Programs (CEP) clinics and Bronze Level goalie coaching clinics.
  • 2020 Minnesota Hockey’s Ted Brill Award winner for 10+ years of serving as director of CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
  • Goalie coach for Gustavus Adolphus College women’s hockey team where goalies have earned these honors: All-American (2018, 2017); MIAC All-Conference (2019, 2018, 2017, 2015, 2004); MIAC Honorable Mention (2012, 2011, 2008, 2006); MIAC All-Rookie Team (2020, 2009).
  • Played four years at Minnesota State University, Mankato, led Mavericks to 1980 NCAA Division II National Championship.
  • Two-time All-American, top 10 finalist for inaugural Hobey Baker Award, presented to best player in men’s college hockey.
  • Invited to participate in free-agent tryout with the NHL’s Minnesota North Stars.
  • Minnesota State Hall of Fame inductee, voted MSU’s male Athlete of the Century in December 1999.
  • First goalie inducted into Edina High School Athletic Hall of Fame, played three years for legendary Hornets’ coach Willard Ikola.
  • Won Minnesota State Peewee “A” championship in first year of playing goalie.

Todd Carlson

  • 11th year on CGS staff.
  • Played Junior Hockey.
  • Played goalie for Richfield High School.
  • Attended several CGS clinics during youth hockey career.

David Carroll

  • 21st year on CGS staff.
  • Coach at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Shooting Camp
  • Played hockey and football for Augsburg University.
  • Participated in five varsity sports at Richfield High School including hockey, football, baseball, tennis, golf.

Joey Hudella

  • 4rd year on CGS staff.
  • Played for goalie for Hastings Jr. Gold team.
  • Attended several CGS clinics during youth hockey career.

Kaitlyn Klein

  • 4th year on CGS staff.
  • All-American at Gustavus Adolphus College.
  • Scored 43 goals, 36 assists for 79 points during collegiate career.
  • Voted team MVP as a senior.
  • Two-time MIAC All-Conference Team.
  • Has Gustavus Comeback Player of the Year Award named after her for inspirational comeback from spinal cord injury.
  • Earned All-Conference honors three times at Wayzata High School.

Amanda Koep

  • 6th year on CGS staff.
  • Played goalie for Gustavus Adolphus College and University of North Dakota.
  • Led North Wright County to Minnesota Girls State High School Hockey Tournament.
  • Attended several CGS clinics during high school career.
  • Goalie coach for the 2020 Let’s Play Hockey Senior High School Girl’s Goalie of the Year.
  • Assistant director, goalie coach at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
  • Participant/counselor at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
  • Goalie development director for St. Michael-Albertville Hockey Association.
  • Staff member at USA Hockey Girls 15 National Player Development Camp.

Bill Manuel

  • 6th year on CGS staff.
  • Played goalie for University of Wisconsin-Stout.
  • Goalie development leader, USA Hockey’s Minnesota District.
  • Assistant director/goalie coach at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
  • Goalie coach for Buffalo High School boy’s team.
  • Coached at goalie schools with Stephane Waite, Montreal Canadiens goalie coach
    and two-time Stanley Cup winner; and legendary Russian Olympic goalie Vladislav Tretiak.

Ashley Ritten

  • 5th year on CGS staff.
  • Played goalie at Gustavus Adolphus College.
  • Played five years varsity hockey for Armstrong High School.
  • Earned All-Conference and Honorable Mention honors.
  • Participant at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
  • Played on a U14 team at age 11.
