Meet the CGS coaching staff
CGS Director Steve Carroll and his talented staff of coaches have been
helping goalies achieve success between the pipes since 1985.
Steve Carroll – Founder and Director of Goalie Development
- Goalie development leader who coaches boys and girls at the youth, high school and college levels.
- Started the Carroll Goalie School (CGS) in 1995. Has trained goalies from around the country including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Alaska, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wyoming.
- Goalie coach for Gustavus Adolphus College women’s hockey team, the 2023 NCAA Division III National Champions.
- Gustavus goalies have earned these honors: Most career wins in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s hockey history (2023); Most Outstanding Player in NCAA Tournament (2023); All-American (2023, 2018, 2017); MIAC All-Conference (2023, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2015, 2004); MIAC Honorable Mention (2022, 2012, 2011, 2008, 2006); MIAC All-Rookie Team (2022, 2020, 2009).
- Founder and director of Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp and HP Shooting Camp. Named Minnesota Hockey’s Ted Brill Award winner for 10+ years of serving as director of CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp (2020).
- Goalie Coach-in-Chief – USA Hockey’s Minnesota District, leads goalie development presentations at USA Hockey Coaching Education Programs (CEP) clinics and Bronze Level goalie coaching clinics.
- Played goalie for Minnesota State University, Mankato, participated in four NCAA Division II Final Fours.
- Led Mavericks to 1980 NCAA Division II National Championship, named Most Outstanding Player.
- Started 115 games during MSU career, won 81 games (second all-time) and made a school record 3,228 saves.
- Two-time All-American.
- Top 10 finalist for inaugural Hobey Baker Award, presented to best player in men’s college hockey.
- Invited to tryout for NHL’s Minnesota North Stars.
- Inducted into Minnesota State University’s Athletic Hall of Fame. (1995)
- Voted Minnesota State’s Male Athlete of the Century (2000).
- Played for legendary coach Willard Ikola at Edina-East (Minn.) High School.
- Participated in Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, finishing in second place.
- Inducted into Edina High School Athletic Hall of Fame (2005).
- Won Minnesota State Peewee “A” Championship in first year of being a goalie; title game played at the old Met Center in Bloomington.
Todd Carlson
- 13th year on CGS staff.
- Played junior hockey following prep career.
- Played goalie for Richfield High School.
- Attended several CGS clinics during youth hockey career.
David Carroll
- 23rd year on CGS staff.
- Coach at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Shooting Camp.
- Coach, Eastview Youth Hockey Association.
- Played hockey and football for Augsburg University.
- Lettered in five varsity sports at Richfield High School including hockey, football, baseball, tennis, golf.
Ashley Checkal
- 7th year on CGS staff.
- Goalie coach at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
- Goalie coach, Armstrong/Cooper Youth Hockey Association.
- Played goalie at Gustavus Adolphus College.
- Played five years varsity hockey for Armstrong High School.
- Earned All-Conference and Honorable Mention honors.
- Participant in Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
- Played on a U14 team at age 11.
Louden Hogg
- 3rd year on CGS staff.
- Trained with Coach Steve Carroll during prep career.
- Goalie demonstrator at USA Hockey coaching clinics.
- Counselor at Minnesota Hockey CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
- Freshmen goalie at Holy Cross in 2022-23.
- Played two years of Jr. A hockey.
- Selected to the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup USA U18 Select team.
- Led Edina High School to state title as a sophomore.
Joey Hudella
- 5th year on CGS staff.
- Played for goalie for Hastings Jr. Gold team.
- Attended several CGS clinics during youth hockey career.
Amanda Kasper
- 8th year on CGS staff.
- Assistant director, goalie coach at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.

- Staff member at USA Hockey Girls 15 National Player Development Camp.
- Goalie coach for Anna LaRose, the 2020 Let’s Play Hockey Senior High School Girl’s Goalie of the Year.

- Played goalie for Gustavus Adolphus College and University of North Dakota.

Brooke Kimel
- 2nd year on CGS staff.
- Attended CGS for nine years in a row.
- Two-time participant at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
- Selected to play on several Minnesota Hockey CCM High Performance teams.
- Varsity goalie for Eagan High School.
- Referee for Minnesota Hockey.
Kaitlyn Klein
- 6th year on CGS staff.
- Earned All-American honors at Gustavus Adolphus College.
- Scored 43 goals, 36 assists for 79 points during collegiate career.
- Voted Most Valuable Player on her team as a college senior.
- Two-time MIAC All-Conference Team member.
- Has Gustavus Comeback Player of the Year Award named after her for inspirational comeback from spinal cord injury.
- Earned All-Conference honors three times at Wayzata High School.
Bill Manuel
- 8th year on CGS staff.
- Goalie development leader, USA Hockey’s Minnesota District.
- Assistant director/goalie coach at Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp.
- Goalie coach for Buffalo High School boy’s team.
- Goalie coach for University of Wisconsin-Stout men’s hockey team.
- Coached at goalie schools with Stephane Waite, Montreal Canadiens goalie coach
and two-time Stanley Cup winner; and legendary Russian Olympic goalie Vladislav Tretiak. - Played goalie for University of Wisconsin-Stout.
